Coffee seeds (commonly referred to as coffee beans) are covered by two membranes: 1. Parchment coat: The outer membrane of the coffee seed is called the "parchment coat" or "parchment layer." It is a thin, protective layer that surrounds the coffee bean and is a result of the drying process during coffee production. 2. Silver skin: The inner membrane of the coffee seed is called the "silver skin" or "silverskin." It is a thin, paper-like layer that is located beneath the parchment coat and encases the actual coffee bean. Both the parchment coat and the silver skin play essential roles in protecting the coffee bean during its growth and processing stages. During coffee processing, these layers are removed to access the green coffee bean, which is then roasted to produce the familiar coffee beans used for making coffee.
